Limasawa Island: boats, sights, history and where to stay

Photo: Chris Spain, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons.

Limasawa is a small island municipality in Southern Leyte, off the southern tip of Leyte, that you reach by boat from Padre Burgos (45 to 60 minutes) or by RORO ferry from Maasin on the mainland, and it is where the first mass in the Philippines is recorded to have been held, on 31 March 1521. It is one of the least touristic places I have visited in the Philippines, and it has some of the clearest water I have seen. This guide has what happened on my trip, and then the practical information from other sources, checked on 14 October 2026.

If I would ever recommend someone to visit a place in the Philippines, it would be this one.

Where is Limasawa Island?

Limasawa is an island municipality of Southern Leyte, south of Leyte, with six barangays on just under 7 square kilometres. Until 1978 it was part of Padre Burgos, the mainland town most boats still leave from (Wikipedia).

Getting there is a whole day

Do not underestimate the travel from Cebu. We arrived at the port, bought tickets and then waited three hours for the ferry to leave, followed by a three-hour crossing on the biggest ferry I have been on. In total it was a ten- to eleven-hour travel day. We slept near the harbour and took the first boat across to Limasawa the next morning, at around half past five.

Two tips from that day:

  • Pack light. I travel with everything on my back, and on days like this you will be glad you did.
  • Talk to people on the ferry. The locals I met on board gave me more good recommendations than any website.

Limasawa to Maasin (RLS) Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 6:00 am About 2 hours ₱250 Pamasahe, updated August 2026

On Sundays the regular boats can be limited or not run; RJD Explorer crossed in a smaller outrigger boat for ₱250. Weather can delay or cancel crossings, so in the rough season plan a spare day.

To the port. From Tacloban to Maasin is an air-con van or bus of 4 to 5 hours, from Ormoc about 3 hours, and from Maasin to Padre Burgos a multicab or jeepney of about 30 minutes (Ahround PH, April 2025). The same guide recommends getting to Padre Burgos the day before the first boat.

RJD Explorer gives these approaches to Padre Burgos:

  • From Tacloban: vans and buses towards Maasin, Sogod and Padre Burgos, 4 to 5 hours to Padre Burgos.
  • From Cebu: a fast craft or ferry to Maasin when available, about 4 to 5 hours, or an overnight ferry to Hilongos and then about 3 hours by van or bus.
  • From Bohol: occasional ferries from Ubay to Maasin on selected days.
  • From Surigao and Mindanao: a ferry to Liloan, then 2 to 3 hours by road via Sogod.

Padre Burgos is on Sogod Bay, the same coast as the wild whale sharks of Pintuyan and Sogod Bay, so the two combine well in one trip.

What there is to see

The National Shrine of the First Mass is the main sight, with a museum and a staircase of about 450 steps up to the cross. Other sights are Totoy Peak (a view over 180 degrees), the Island Lagoon in Barangay San Agustin, Magallanes Port, the area called “Little Batanes”, the lighthouse and Dakdak Beach (GMA News, March 2026).

A full-day island tour described by RJD Explorer covers these stops:

  • North Parola: a lighthouse on the cliffs with views over clear water, best in the morning light.
  • Island Lagoon Resort: down a steep staircase below North Parola, with calm water sheltered by rocks.
  • South Parola: the second lighthouse, on the southern tip, facing the sunrise.
  • Magellan’s Cross and the National Shrine of the First Mass: the cross on the hill is a replica, and the shrine grounds feel more like a park.
  • Dakdak Beach Resort: coconut palms and turquoise water. RJD Explorer describes the shore as mostly coral fragments and small pebbles rather than white sand, and in shade by late afternoon, so go earlier in the day.
  • Bad-as Peak and Totoy-Totoy Peak: Bad-as is the easy viewpoint; Totoy-Totoy is a short, steep climb over roots, with a rock near the top used for sunset.
  • I Love Limasawa marker by the municipal hall, and the Welcome to Limasawa marker near the port.
  • Magallanes Port: used for diving and freediving, with several dive sites around the island.

How many days you need

The island is small. RJD Explorer found that one full day covers the highlights unless you plan to dive or freedive, and that the boat times, not the sights, set the pace. A day trip is possible but leaves little margin. The rhythm that guide suggests is to arrive on the afternoon of day one, tour on day two and take a morning boat back on day three.

Getting around the island

Tricycles wait for arriving boats at the port. RJD Explorer reports about ₱30 per person to Dakdak Beach Resort and about ₱50 per person to the South Parola area. Motorbikes are rented through accommodation, guides or residents at ₱500 to 800 a day, and a full-day tour on the back of a guide’s motorbike cost that guide ₱1,200 for one person. Groups of two to four can share a tricycle tour instead.

The water

The moment you arrive, you see it: the water is so clear that you can see the bottom from fifty metres out. At low tide it is beautiful, and at high tide it gets even better. I swam with sea turtles right in front of where we stayed. Ask where you stay for the best snorkelling spots.

The first mass in Limasawa

Limasawa is where the first mass in the Philippines is recorded to have been held: Father Pedro de Valderrama celebrated it on Easter Sunday, 31 March 1521, during Magellan’s expedition (Wikipedia). Butuan has also claimed the site, and a National Historical Commission panel reaffirmed Limasawa. It named Barangay Triana as the site of the mass and Saub Point as the site of the cross (World Mission Magazine, December 2020).

The name has two stories. The local story is that lima means five and sawa means wives in Bisaya, after a king on the island who had five wives. I was told this, and it is a legend. Historians trace the name to Masawa, a Butuanon word for bright light, which Pigafetta wrote as Mazaua (GMA News, March 2026).

Where to eat

Food on the island is simple: local eateries and resort restaurants. RJD Explorer reports a breakfast combo of rice, egg, a viand and coffee for about ₱170 at the Genezareth Resort restaurant, silog meals from about ₱75 at JV Silog near the port, and Pink & Apple as a small eatery in the town proper. At Dakdak Beach Resort on a busy weekend, that guide waited about an hour and a half for food.

Where we stayed, and Dakdak Beach Resort

We stayed with a local family who cooked for us, and spent both days at Dakdak Beach Resort, the spot locals call the Moana village of the Philippines. It sits right on the beach, and turtles swim in front of it. In the morning a moving bakery drives through the village shouting for pandesal, hot, fresh bread, and one of the best ways to start a day here. Other places named by the 2025 guide are Island Lagoon Resort, Evashore Beach Resort and Trimulco Traveller’s Lodge.

RJD Explorer (July 2026) reports room rates of ₱900 to 3,500 at South Parola Beach Resort, on the cliffs of the southern tip with steps down to the sea, ₱1,500 to 4,000 at Dakdak Beach Resort and ₱1,000 to 3,000 at Island Lagoon Resort, and also names Genezareth Resort.

To be clear: the owner of Dakdak gave us food and a boat to film the island. That makes it a hosted visit, and that is why I mention it.

Good to know

  • Bring cash, and enough of it for the whole stay.
  • Plan an extra night on the mainland side for the early boat, and a spare day in case the weather stops the crossing.
  • Check Sunday boats in advance; regular services can be limited.
  • Respect the reef and the turtles: look, do not touch.
  • The best months are March to May, with December to February also pleasant (RJD Explorer, July 2026). Avoid long weekends and holidays for fewer crowds.

Limasawa is day three of the Southern Leyte trip I am planning, together with the wild whale sharks of Pintuyan and Sogod Bay on the same stretch of coast.
