Where to stay in Siargao: General Luna, Cloud 9 or Pacifico

Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island, and nearly everyone staying here picks one of three stretches of its east and north coast. Pick your base by how much you want within walking distance, because the rest of the island is a scooter ride away.

Robert’s own pick on Siargao: Rucksack Inn

Rucksack Inn is in Catangnan, General Luna. I stayed there, and it is the hostel I recommend on Siargao. The hostel lists dorms and private rooms, an outdoor pool, a coworking space and daily activities. That makes it a social base with a choice of room types. Every other hostel I list, place by place, is on the best hostels in the Philippines page.

Before you choose: a social hostel does not mean an all-night party in your room. The property lists quiet hours from 10pm, or 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Check the room type and current conditions when booking.

Quick picks

  • First time in Siargao: General Luna. The most restaurants, surf schools and nightlife within walking or short scooter distance.
  • Surfing is the whole trip: the Cloud 9 boardwalk, so the lineup is a walk from your room rather than a ride.
  • On a budget: General Luna has the widest choice of hostels and guesthouses, from roughly $15 a night (see below).
  • As a couple, or a longer/second trip: Pacifico and the north coast, quieter and more boutique, built around the Big Wish break.

Area Feel To the Cloud 9 break To Sayak airport Price bracket Best for
General Luna The island’s main town: restaurants, surf schools, scooter rental and bars, busiest after dark ≈10–15 min by scooter or tricycle ≈45 min–1hr by van Budget to mid-range, from ≈$15/night First-timers, nightlife, booking a lesson on the spot
Cloud 9 boardwalk A beachfront strip right on the break, quieter at night than General Luna proper On-site ≈45 min–1hr, via General Luna Budget to mid-range Surfers wanting an early paddle-out
Pacifico & the north coast (San Isidro) Remote, boutique to luxury, built around the Big Wish reef break, little nightlife ≈45 min–1hr by scooter to General Luna/Cloud 9 ≈1–1.5hr Mid-range to luxury Couples, longer stays, advanced surfers, a second Siargao trip

General Luna: the default base

The town most first-time visitors choose. Restaurants, cafes, surf schools, scooter rental and the island’s nightlife are all here, and you can manage a day or two without a vehicle. The trade-off is noise and traffic on the main road, so ask how far a room sits from it.

Why here: everything is walkable or a short tricycle ride, easiest place to book a surf lesson or a boat on the spot. Why not: the busiest, noisiest part of the island after dark.

Tourism Road frontage or the back lanes: rooms facing Tourism Road itself are closest to restaurants and surf shops but pick up traffic and bar noise well into the evening. The small lanes one or two turns off the main road cut that out almost entirely and are still a few minutes’ walk to the same restaurants, ask for one of these if you want to sleep.

Cloud 9 boardwalk: sleeping on the break

Rooms right on the Cloud 9 boardwalk put you beside the best-known break on the island, a short walk from the tower and the lineup. It suits surfers who want to be on the water at first light, over anyone chasing General Luna’s bigger choice of restaurants and bars.

Why here: you can walk to the break, quieter evenings than General Luna’s main road. Why not: fewer restaurants, a short ride back to town for a bigger night out.

Pacifico & the north coast: the quiet, boutique side

A long, wide stretch of beach in San Isidro on the north coast, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by scooter from General Luna. The draw is Big Wish, a fast reef break that on its day rivals Cloud 9, alongside a softer right-hander for less advanced surfers. The area skews boutique and luxury, with few budget rooms and little going on after dinner.

Why here: a quieter, less crowded beach, the Big Wish break, well-reviewed boutique properties. Why not: 45 minutes to an hour from General Luna’s restaurants and the main surf schools, limited budget options.

Before you book

Check how you’re arriving. The airport at Sayak is on the northern side of the island, closer to Pacifico than to General Luna, so a ride south to General Luna or Cloud 9 is part of the plan either way. If Sugba Lagoon is on your list, Del Carmen on the west side is the boat jump-off, not a place to base yourself overnight, see island hopping, Sugba Lagoon and Magpupungko for how the logistics line up, things to do in Siargao beyond the boat tours for the land-based stops, and a 5-day Siargao itinerary for how to fit it all together. The Siargao trip I’m building is still on the waitlist, and a session with me is the fastest way to ask how a longer stay or a Pacifico add-on fits your dates.

Questions people ask

Where should I stay in Siargao for the first time?

General Luna. It has the most restaurants, surf schools and scooter rental on the island, and the Cloud 9 break is a short ride away. It is also the busiest part of Siargao after dark.

Do I need to stay near Cloud 9 to surf?

No. Surf schools in General Luna run lessons at several breaks and arrange the transport, so a room in town works as well as one beside the break itself.

Is it worth staying right on the Cloud 9 boardwalk?

If an early paddle-out matters to you, yes, you can walk straight onto the break. It is quieter at night than General Luna proper, but you give up some of the town's restaurant choice and need a short ride back for a bigger night out.

What is Pacifico, and is it worth staying there?

Pacifico, in San Isidro on the north coast, is a remote stretch of beach built up with boutique and luxury resorts around the Big Wish reef break, about 45 minutes to an hour by scooter from General Luna. It suits a longer stay or a second Siargao trip more than a first one, see the comparison table above.

Is the north or Del Carmen side better for a quiet stay?

Del Carmen itself, on the west side, is mainly the boat jump-off for Sugba Lagoon, not a place people base themselves overnight. Pacifico and San Isidro on the north coast are the actual quiet-stay option, and the better base specifically for an early Sugba Lagoon start, see the island hopping guide.

Where to stay in Siargao on a budget?

General Luna has the widest range of hostels and budget guesthouses, with Tripadvisor listing General Luna rooms from roughly $15 a night at the cheaper end.

How many nights should I spend in Siargao?

Most visitors base themselves in General Luna for a week or more: a few days easing into surfing or taking lessons, a day for island hopping, a day for Sugba Lagoon and Magpupungko, and the rest open for the beach and surf.

Do I need to book Siargao accommodation in advance?

During peak season General Luna's better-located rooms and Pacifico's small number of boutique resorts both fill up, so book at least a week or two ahead rather than arriving and looking.

Are there ATMs in Siargao?

General Luna has the island's best ATM coverage, several machines along Tourism Road plus a bank branch, but they can run dry over holiday weekends and in peak season. Withdraw a larger amount early and carry some backup cash, most tricycles and small places are cash only.

Do I need my own WiFi or a local SIM in Siargao?

Most resorts and cafes in General Luna have WiFi, but it can be patchy, especially out toward Pacifico. A local Globe or Smart SIM is worth getting at the airport or in town if you need a steadier connection.

Is Siargao safe for tourists?

Yes, it has a strong reputation as one of the safer, more laid-back islands in the Philippines. General Luna's Tourism Road stays busy and lit well into the evening; the usual precautions apply, don't leave valuables unattended at the beach or at bars, and watch your step on potholed side streets at night.

Does Siargao have power outages?

Yes, and a bad one can run far longer than a typical mainland brownout. The island's electricity runs over a submarine cable from Mindanao, so a cable fault can cut power for a long time. Bigger resorts in General Luna and Pacifico generally run generators through a cut; smaller guesthouses often don't, so a power bank is worth packing wherever you stay.
